“A-Bombed Mary”


Asahi Simbun, one of Japan’s leading newspapers reported on 4/17/2010:

NAGASAKI–The head of a wooden statue of the Virgin Mary that withstood the U.S. atomic bombing of Nagasaki is to be displayed in New York ahead of next month’s United Nations Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty review conference.

All that remains of the 2-meter statue and base is its head, found in the rubble of the Urakami Cathedral (St. Mary’s Cathedral) in October 1945, two months after the bombing that killed 70,000 people before the year was out.
