Rural Civil Defense Youth Program (1960)

14Dec09

The Rural Civil Defense Youth Program (Office of Civil and Defense Mobilization, MP-22, 1960?; SuDoc Pr 34.759:22) is a civil defense  “leaders’ guide” for those “who teach American boys and girls.” The publication stresses the importance of knowledge concerning  fallout shelters and survivability, the dynamics of radioactive fallout, and suggestions for civil defense education projects in the home and community.

Rural Defense is not without its ideological underpinnings, as its Introduction indicates:

Communism is the enemy of our democracy. Russia has nuclear weapons which might be used against us, and other hostile nations may soon have them. It is the age of danger — but not hopeless danger. (p. 1)
