The Welfare Task in Civil Defense (1953)

One of the reasons I’m fascinated by U.S. atomic-era civil defense docs is for the art. The Welfare Task in Civil Defense (Washington: U.S. G.P.O., 1953; SuDoc FCD 1.2:W 45) is one of many docs that has simply breathtaking illustrations.

One can’t help but wonder the background of the artist who captured “CD Emergency Welfare Services” for “bombed out persons.” The black and white drawings, originally done in charcoal, I believe, are stunning and unsettling. The scan doesn’t do the eight-page pamphlet justice.

See for yourself and download the pamphlet here.

Thanks to Tutt Library, Government Publications Department @ Colorado College for lending this incredible document.
